New way to file federal income tax returns, free and easy

Many New Jersey residents will soon have a new way to file income tax returns, online and for free, under a tax-filing service enhancement announced by federal and state officials on Wednesday (7/24).

A federal “Direct File” pilot program launched by the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year is now being expanded to all 50 states, with New Jersey being the latest to sign on as a partner, according to Wednesday’s announcement.

As a result, more than 1 million New Jersey residents are estimated to be eligible to participate in the expanded program next year when filing federal tax returns.
