Legislative Update

 

The following legislative committees were scheduled to meet on Monday,
December 6:

Senate: Community and Urban Affairs; Labor; Transportation; Budget & Appropriations; and Heath, Human Services and Senior Citizens

Assembly (subject to change): Consumer Affairs: Health; Telecommunications and Utilities; Commerce & Economic Development; and Higher Education.

Senate Committees scheduled to meet on Thursday, 12/9:Higher Education; Economic Growth; and Law & Public Safety.

Action on Bills that may be of interest to NJCFE members:

A-2286: Requires institutions of higher education to provide graduating students with
information on income-contingent student loan repayment programs. Having passed both houses,
A-2286 awaits action by the Governor.

A-5381: Requires financial aid award letter provided by institutions of higher education and
certain proprietary schools be consistent with financial aid shopping sheet. 12/2 Senate
amendments added. Next action to be determined.

S-969: Establishes loan redemption program for teachers in certain fields to redeem loan
amounts received under New Jersey College Loans to Assist State Students Loan Program
through employment in certain low performing schools. 12/2 Senate concurred with governor’s
recommendations. Next action: Assembly vote on concurring amendments, to be determined.

S-3471: Requires students to complete financial aid application as part of high school
graduation requirements. 12/6 scheduled consideration by Senate Budget & Appropriations
Committee.

S-850: Prohibits tax preparation software companies from charging fee for electronically filing
State tax returns. Having passed the Senate last June, S-850 was scheduled for consideration by
the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee on 12/6.
