“An Early Start on Saving for Retirement “

******************************************************************

All parents want to teach their children good money habits from an early age. Many start by giving them an allowance. But it’s equally important to teach children a positive, generous attitude as they learn to use money responsibly. Filled with warm, memorable illustrations by award-winning painter, April Willy, Three Cups is the story of one family’s unique and effective method of teaching personal financial management—and how one boy reaped first the small, then the immeasurably great rewards of the lessons he learned.  Families will be delighted with the heart-warming tale and want to integrate the three-cup system in their own children’s lives.

The Career Quest Program and in the development of their “Career Owner’s Manual” students will realize that any challenges they face will be worth overcoming. They will understand the benefit of sacrificing their time, money and effort, when there is now a future worth working towards.

Financial Resources

Here at Teachers College Columbia University, through a grant from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, and led by Professor Anand Marri, a group of faculty members and graduate students have developed a curriculum about the federal budget, national debt and budget deficit called Understanding Fiscal Responsibility (UFR, http://understandingfiscalresponsibility.org/).

The curriculum comes at a timely moment in our nation’s history. With unemployment at close to 9% and the economy growing at barely 2%, political debate about the near-term significance of the national debt is at an all time high. While the country is challenged to maintain its commitments to its most vulnerable citizens, to increase revenue by growing the economy, raising taxes, or both, and to bring longterm spending commitments into line with projected resources, quick fixes abound.    Organized around the overarching question: “How should we address our nation’s fiscal challenges today and in the future in a manner that is consistent with our values and traditions?” the goal of the UFR curriculum is prepare students to take on these issues in all of their complexities so that, as adults, they can make informed and independent assessments of the trade-offs built into any solution.   The EdLab, Teachers College Columbia University (http://edlab.tc.columbia.edu/) has created web resources to compliment the curriculum and is also leading the efforts to inform educators and potential users of this resource. The curriculum can be taught and used in a variety of subjects such as US History, Civics, Mathematics, Global History, Government, and Social Studies.

Did You Know?
Recently Arthur C. Brooks wrote an article in the Op-Ed Section of the Wall Street Journal in which he recalled the now famous 1972 Stamford psychologist who did an ingenious experiment. He placed a marshmallow in front of young children and told them if they wait fifteen minutes before eating the marshmallow they would receive a second one as a reward. Thus, for the investment of fifteen minutes they could have two marshmallows instead of one. About two thirds of the children failed the experiment as they desired immediate gratification and gobbled up the single marshmallow right away. What are we doing to teach our children to save?
